MESSAGE FROM ADVOCACY |
The beacon for freelancer rights |
“We’ve created an Advocacy Framework and incorporated it into Safrea’s business strategy. This crucial step will ensure that advocacy remains at the heart of Safrea as the beacon for freelancer rights. The framework is the plan that outlines our value proposition for key stakeholders such as government and businesses. It is the compass that charts our course,” said Lionel Krieger, recently elected head of Advocacy on Safrea’s Exco.

Photographer of the Month Robert Bruce
This month, we feature the photography of Robert Bruce, also known as Robert Smit. Robert began taking photographs as a hobby in 1999 whilst living in Cape Town. In 2008, he did his first professional shoot on Johnny Clegg, which was published in the Sunday Independent newspaper.
His photographic work is quite diverse - it deals specifically with (but not limited to) architecture, events, interior design, products, portraiture, studio, travel, fashion shows and video. Robert is ahead of most photographers – he has the ability to meet the demands of any genre, and his work complies with international commercial standards. His deliverables are always on time, and exceed requirements of clients worldwide.
Thank you to Robert for the use of his photographs. You can follow him at

How to work smart, not hard |
"It’s easy to be busy. Less so to be productive. The two are very different. Busy is doing stuff, while productive is doing the right stuff. As freelancers our goal is to create a successful business, not busyness. How do we go about working smart versus hard – working less and earning more?” |

Generative AI and its impact on editors |
While generative AI is highly capable, it has limitations and may sometimes produce incorrect or nonsensical responses. Therefore, it is important to critically evaluate and verify the information provided by any AI system. This was a key point raised at the latest Coffee Club of Safrea’s Eastern Cape region. |

Acknowledgement of sources
In the July and August editions of the Safrean newsletter, we unintentionally omitted to acknowledge the sources that contributed to the content of the newsletters. We regret this oversight and would like to rectify it with transparency and gratitude. The following sources were used from the presentations of PEG’s 30th Anniversary Conference:
• How to sing a global editorial song in the Digital Age by Louise Harnby - July (A Coffee Club with a difference)
• The Digital Age: Make or break for professional relationships by Alexis Grewan - August (How to communicate professionally in the digital age)
We apologise for any confusion that may have arisen from this oversight. We are committed to upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity.
